THE ULTIMATE CHALLENGE TO SCIENTISTS! – WHY WE SLEEP

I challenge scientists ultimately as follows-

Sleep (Img: Liveclever.com)

Sleep (Image: Liveclever.com)

The non believing scientific world with all their modern technology should justify why humans spend almost half of their lives in sleep. Before they figure out more complex things, galaxies and the likes, they should explain this simple thing that affects all of us… a most characteristic, essential activity we are engaged in through out our lives. What is the use of this if not a divine, non physical purpose. Why do we sleep?

Science no doubt professes to have so many answers, aided with their gadgets. So they should at the very least give an evolutionary justification to what we do almost half of our lives. That is significant, very significant!

Now here is the reason for my challenge, which actually stems from the Muslim Quran. The Quran says of sleep:

Quran 78:9 and We have made your sleep [a symbol of] death

Quran 39:42 It is God [alone that has this power – He] who causes all human beings to die at the time of their [bodily] death, and [causes to be as dead], during their sleep, those that have not yet died: [44] thus, He withholds [from life] those upon whom He has decreed death, and lets the others go free for a term set [by Him]. In [all] this, behold, there are messages indeed for people who think!

Quran 25:47 And He it is who makes the night a garment for you, and [your] sleep a rest, and causes every [new] day to be a resurrection.

Quran 30:23 And among His wonders is your sleep, at night or in daytime, as well as your [ability to go about in] quest of some of His bounties: in this, behold, there are messages indeed for people who [are willing to] listen!

Upon coming across this, I immediately knew by inspiration that science had no explanation yet for half our lives, – the very essential part spent in sleep, and that evolution does not answer this need. A quick search revealed that I was absolutely right.

NewYork Times:

But even the most gifted scientist on the planet cannot explain why people sleep.

”It may be the biggest open question in biology,” said Dr. Allan Rechtschaffen, a sleep expert and a professor emeritus at the University of Chicago.

Scientists’ ignorance about one of life’s most basic activities is not for lack of trying.

Fifty years of sleep research have ruled out some possibilities and yielded a variety of intriguing leads.

One of the best guesses science has yet given, is that sleep somehow allows the brain neurons rest. But you see, the reason science and evolution can not explain sleep is the simple question- why make a machine that needs to switch off/rest?  Why not evolve in a manner, where you can work and progress in both the day and nocturnally? Why this unique activity that reduces our life time efficacy? Machines are made today that run 24hrs/day all year long. Why need rest?

This is the ultimate challenge. And I invite anyone and everyone to give a none spiritual, extra-earthly realm and dimensional answer to this essential question, or to deny the simple answer or give a reason for the denial of it as I present next.

Now let me explain the basic reality from the Religions Holy book- Quran.

In sleep, we die!

Let’s use the car example that is so often used in attempts to explain sleep. The body should be able to run as a special car driving, 24 hours a day, all several years long. Picture a car driving around. The car only rests, when the driver parks it and leaves. Once the driver is no longer in the car, the car, though capable and able is as dead. So the driver is the soul of the car, and the car, just a vessel. The car dies and is resurrected over and over. The reason it parks is not to rest, even though it cools down, etc at this time. These are not essential but just useful gains of the rest. The rest is a spiritual event, here the soul of the car exits the dimension of the car and enters another dimension. Hence it can easily be proven that sleep and death are two identical states, and there is an additional essence to man, other than the cells and networks that operate him.

If scientists re-channel their efforts on sleep to figuring out the quantitative and qualitative loss of an essence, the soul, while a person sleeps, realizing that the carcass left is just a breathing biological contraption. They will properly understand sleep, and the reality of our existence/life in the earthly realm and our attachment to our Creator/Controller.

Till then, I challenge them to provide evidence of a lack of this disconnection, to prove the functional dissimilarity between a sleeping man and a dead man, and to simply answer- why we sleep.

There is much more to be discussed on the ultimate gain of this recognition, which I shall present to all subscribers in the course of this challenge.

Sleep is obviously very very different from death. All our organs continue to work, including the brain. Doctors will tell you we have all kinds of brain wave activity during sleep, which stops when a person is “brain dead” (even if the body continues to live).

Nobody knows why exactly we need to sleep, but doctors do know that we can even get physically sick if we don’t sleep enough. For example there is a reduction in insulin production, which can cause or aggravate diabetes.

Most higher animals sleep as well. It appears highly developed brains need to go into periods of reduced activity (sleep) in order to function properly. Some animals, like whales and dolphins that need to come regularly to the surface to breathe, sleep with only half of their brains. Sharks probably do the same, since they cant stop swimming.

There was a 3 year old boy in the USA recently that could not sleep. As a result he was always very irritable. Doctors found the bottom of his cranium was too small, putting pressure on the brain. After removing some bone from his head and spinal chord, he can now sleep normally:

I don’t see any indication sleep can be of spiritual origin, especially since animals also sleep. But I agree that the renewed energy we feel in the morning, could be described as a “resurrection” of sorts.

Given that some animals sleep and others don’t, your spiritual explanation makes no sense.

doctorApril 6th, 2009 at 2:37 am

@ Mike,

How does that affect the issue? That’s rather the whole idea. That since it is not essential, and some animals do and some don’t that WHY?

Are signs in spirituality only supposed to be set/demonstrated in people?

Why do those of us that sleep, sleep?

you are an idiot .

Erm… why do bears sleep for prolonged periods of time? to conserve energy. What happens during sleep? your body repairs itself. Those are just two reasons we evolved to want sleep.

doctorJune 15th, 2009 at 4:56 am

@8039,

That is not why we ‘evolved’ to sleep. Some animals don’t sleep after all. So, why did we ‘evolve’ to sleep?

8039June 15th, 2009 at 7:24 am

Like I said, to conserve energy. Why do bears sleep? they eat a decent amount of food (if possible) and go into a deep slumber to save energy. During sleep we use a minimal amount of energy. This is also a time for us to do any body repairs we need. Our brains are fully functional whilst we sleep doing various tasks.

Let me ask you “doctor”, you claim that some animals don’t sleep at all. Name me a single animal that does not sleep.

excuse me mr.cruz but the quran is saying thatsleeping is defferent that dying he is only saying he is like dying while sleeping we loose the sense of time and placelike when we die and we have dreams that has an apparent effect on our brain electricity .it is only a sign that we like we sleep now and wake up we will die and be resurercted…..you can also read the chapter “the most glorious” of the quran talking about the unseen barriers between the seas which has been proven by science less then a hunderd years i think….mohammed did not even travel by sea….you may read about costeau, i think that is his name, the french scientist who embraced islam atfer knowing this fact.quran is full of evidences that we cannot be written by a man who can’t even read and write…..by the way,the bible and the torah include predictions about him and that he will be a man who don’t read or write.

ahmed fathyJuly 9th, 2009 at 6:30 am

sorry mr. Cruz i meant the Quran chapter “the most gracious”…you can also check the prophet sayings about human emberyonic developement and how it is matching with science facts recently discovered….check this site if you want,http://www.elnaggarzr.com

Why do we sleep? Perchance to dream.
